George Schreiber
Liverpool, PA
George Schreiber, 88, formerly of Newport and Liverpool, passed away peacefully at
UPMC Hospice in Harrisburg on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. He was surrounded by his
loving family. He made them and his medical care team smile with his humble good
nature and quick wit until the very end.
George was a 1953 graduate of Newport Joint High School. He proudly served in the
US Army in Ethiopia, and had great stories of his adventures touring Egypt. He
worked as a carpenter and lifelong farmer, taking over his father’s farm in Howe
Township. George retired to Liverpool where he became known for his fine
woodworking that included crafting jewelry boxes, bluebird houses, and furniture. He
also lent a hand for several years on the farm of his niece, Sue and Lloyd Byers.
George dedicated countless volunteer hours to many community organizations, and
his churches (St. Paul’s Lutheran Newport, Good Shepherd Liverpool, and Blessed
Hope). He was proud of his involvement with the Perry County Fair, spending weeks
preparing the facilities and helping set up the antique barns, and he served as a board
director for many years.
He also loved simple joys like fishing with Marjorie on Canadian Lakes and seashore
vacations with his family. George was always up for a breakfast run to see the
entertaining crew of friends at Bitting’s Restaurant on the Newport Square.
He is survived by his wife Marjorie, to whom he was devoted for 60 years; four
children, Greg (Debra), Linda, Diana, and Thomas (Eileen); eleven grandchildren; Amy,
Katie, Jordon, Cole, Tyler, Matthew, Stephanie, Megan, Jessica, Samantha, and
Sophia; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and
nephews.
George was predeceased by parents, Albert and Vera; wife, Nancy, and brothers,
John, Bob, Harry; and sisters, Doris, Nancy, and Mary.
All are welcome for public visitation, 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 29 at Blessed Hope
Bible Church, Liverpool, with Christian service at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, his family requests a donation to Bethesda Mission, 611 Reily Street,
